One thing worth saving

In the midst of the devastation, what would you save?
One month ago, Hurricane Matthew ripped through southwestern Haiti, leaving behind destroyed homes, flooded villages, flattened crops, and uprooted trees. Although Lifeline's main campus at Grand Goave suffered little damage, our outlying schools and churches were severely damaged and many families lost their homes.

Our first relief team journeyed to Torbeck, our southernmost church and school community. Although there was much work to do, there were many instances where they were overwhelmed by the loss.

One moment stands out...

The pastor in Torbeck was leading us to the church members' homes that were most damaged by the hurricane. With our chainsaws, we could quickly remove the fallen trees on the homes and then move on to the next home.

But one home caused us all to pause.

We approached the remains of the house and worked to determine the safest way to remove the trees from in and around the house. The family's personal items were scattered in and around their home; very few items appeared salvageable. We simply stood there, taking it all in, imagining the sense of loss for this family.

And then someone pointed out the Bible.

There among all the debris, lay pieces of their Bible. Each torn and dirty page had been carefully gathered, pressed flat and set in the sun to dry. This one item worth saving. This one item, clearly their most prized possession, lovingly salvaged.

It was a reminder to us all of the hope that God provides when all seems lost. It was a reminder of why were there and a reminder of the deep faith of the Haitians that inspires us all.

Your special gifts for hurricane relief have provided food and emergency assistance to families devastated by the hurricane.  Now we must help families rebuild their homes and stabilize their lives.
