Why do I need to complete a background check?
Lifeline Christian Mission (LCM) is committed to the protection of all persons associated with LCM, volunteers, those we minister to and our staff. Our desire is to:
- Protect children and the elderly
- Provide a safe environment for our volunteers and staff
- Have a proactive approach to safety Avoid negligence
Who will complete the background check?
You will complete the authorization for the background check from the link that is sent to your email about 4 weeks prior to the trip date.
This will authorize that a background check be conducted by Choice Screening, an external organization. Choice Screening specializes in conducting background checks for volunteers in full compliance with applicable state and federal laws and guidelines, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Their digital consent process, with built-in electronic signature keeps the entire process quick, easy and accurate.

Is there an extra cost for the background check?
No, there will be no additional charge for the background check.
What checks will be conducted?
The following checks will be conducted:
- Verified National Criminal Database Search
- National Sex Offender Registry
- Most Wanted Lists FBI, DEA, ATF, Interpol
- OFAC Terrorist Database Search
- OIG, GSA, SAM, FDA Debarment
- All felonies and misdemeanors reported to the National database
- Social Security Trace
- Discovers other names/aliases associated with the social security number the applicant has reported and will report into the National Criminal Database
- Social Security Number Trace + Associated Counties
- Accesses a broader scope of criminal records, beyond the county in which the applicant currently resides
- Motor Vehicle Record (for select team members only)
- Checking that drivers are licensed without restriction and free from citations and violations that could pose a risk to others on the open road
What happens if something comes up in my background check?
Background check findings shall be reviewed in a fair, impartial and confidential manner. Because everyone serving on the mission field interacts with vulnerable populations and LCM’s priority is safety of those we serve, volunteers and staff, certain actions and convictions for certain crimes serve to automatically disqualify applicants for employment or volunteer service at Lifeline Christian Mission in any position that involves working with children.
A person will be ineligible for volunteer service if the person:

- refuses to consent to a criminal background check
- makes a false statement in connection with such criminal background check
- is registered, or required to be registered on any sex offender registry
- is convicted of any sex offense regardless of the amount of time since said offense
With respect to convictions for crimes not listed above, any applicant with such a conviction shall be evaluated on an individual basis to determine whether they should be excluded from consideration based on the conviction. In so doing, Lifeline Christian Mission shall consider the following factors:
- the nature and gravity of the offense
- the time that has passed since the offense or completion of sentence
- the facts and circumstances surrounding the offense or conduct
- the number of offenses for which the individual was convicted
- the age of the individual at the time of conviction or release
LCM shall alert the applicant to the possibility of his or her exclusion due to past criminal conduct and provide the applicant an opportunity to submit an explanation. All personal data, background check data and adverse action letters shall be treated as confidential and maintained in a secure location.
What if I disagree with the contents of the background check?
If the volunteer should choose to appeal the contents of the report, the individual is responsible for taking appropriate action with Choice Screening to have the results of the criminal background check report corrected if they believe information was reported in error. The volunteer is responsible for providing any and all documentation to support his or her claim. Any person who willfully fails to comply with the background screening process or procedures shall be automatically disqualified.
