BeFriend Los Naranjos

Los Naranjos is located about 50 miles south of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Local tourism generates growth in the economy and population. Nearby Lake Yojoa attracts visitors from around the world to experience its stunning scenery and diverse wildlife.
Residents of Los Naranjos value their peaceful lifestyle. Crime in the area is low, but the community is impaired by poverty and lack of resources.
Family life is the central building block of the community. A typical household consists of five to ten family members. Most people live in close relationship with the land, their primary source of income coming from fishing, agriculture, and cattle raising.
What issues does Los Naranjos face?
Financial and resource constraints burden most families. Typically only the male head of the household is employed. Most young men and male adults are fishermen and laborers.
Not all of the children in Los Naranjos finish elementary school, and only a small minority of students attend high school or technical programs (mining, electricity, welding, mechanics, etc). Poverty and skewed beliefs about education lead most local children to start school somewhere between age 8 and 12. Low education rates produce a high percentage of illiteracy.
There are some Christian and Pentecostal churches along with a Catholic church in the community. However, issues around the teaching of sound doctrine pose a challenge.
About Los Naranjos Christian Church
Los Naranjos Christian Church began in 2018 from a grassroots approach to ministry. Prior to its founding, Pastors Mauricio Bonilla, Brayan Marquina and a group of lay leaders shared the gospel door-to-door as part of their involvement with Santa Cruz Christian Church (a Lifeline church). After a few weeks, they started holding Bible studies. From these small gatherings, two house churches were formed within the span of three months. They began meeting on Tuesdays in the homes of Mateo and Lety, who are founding members of the church.
In March of 2019, Pastor Brayan moved to Los Naranjos to formally lead the community and move the church into its next season of growth. Today the church has 25 to 30 members and is led by Pastor Cesar Alexis Rodriguez, who came to serve in July 2022.
